For those of you who do not speak Portuguese, I have been posting a series of information concerning an Academic project in Environmental Engeneering. My previous post translates as follows:

The recent worldwide economical crisis created a rupture in the yet incipient effort to minimize the environmental impacts and to create a better life style for populations.

Many countries have seen ignored their positive investment on the requalification and sustainable management of the resources, and the very word "sustainability" has lost its political and economical meaning.

The concept of "industrial symbioses" tests the entreprises capability of creating a sinergy, and it raises an opportunity to create an innovative and efective sustainable policy.

An Industrial complex is, in its essence, an industrial island complex: like a small group of islands, an industrial complex where industrial symbioses is verified is a reunion of enterprises that work simbiotically with each other.

How? The answer is simple: each enterprise will produce a certain residue, which can be energetic or material residue, and that same residue will then be used by another enterprise on their industrial activities.

These type of complexes can be found all around the world. Kalundborg eco park, in Denmark, is a case of sucess.

In Portugal, a group o students has come up with a net of mass and energy exchanges (residual water, heat, biomass, etc.) between several types of industries that could be interested in starting a business in Sines. Why Sines? Because of its location and geografical characteristics, as well as the existance of a fishing port, that create a large potencial for the development of a good industrial complex.

The sustainable charing between the entreprises will take place by the exchange or selling of the residues (depending on which is more profitable) to another enterprise, to serve as its raw material.

The implementation of one of these cenarios will bring some benefits to the environment (with the preservation of the yet existing resources and reduction of the environmental impact of these kind of activities), to the economy (with the cost reduction for waste management treatment) and to the society, by creating jobs and opportunities for those who seek a sustainable future in Portugal and worldwide.

Good idea, yes or no? It's open to discussion!
